am i the only person to do somethin like this?

i played with cars only, basicly, through out my childhood, and my dads tools.
they said they bought me dolls but i only liked when my sister messed up the hair,
and i ripped them apart and played with my dads tools and he got mad cuz i was a girl.

well anyway,
idk many in my family or many of my friends even that restore everything,
but i got a thing for engines, and autobody, and just plain repairs of things that run,
and metals.

well i got my first car, an 85 buick century.
i got it as a practice car- cuz i want a muscle car, like seriously, a shell of one, or a shell with an engine and tranny.

anyway, so i stripped the buick of everything, body wise, and im completely redoing it.

some people (people i dont know) react normally when i tell them what i do,

but my family and boyfriend react like im crazy, saying im obsessed with my car.

my boyfriend is jealous of it.
i tried to tell him: its an inanimate object that im finishing up, and people junk metals just like it all the time, but i dont like the idea of my cars metals being turned into metals for the thinner-metal newer cars. cuz they pile up due to having so much plastic.
(hes mad cuz i change plans sometimes to get it done faster).

i have parts in my room, and i have parts in the yard and all over the garage, and i have an organizing system lol with baggies so i can remember things for reassembly.

right now, im paintin it. but after paints on, im puttin new fabrics inside and paintin the interior plastics.

why is everyone critical of me doing this? like, why cant they just see that im doing the same thing as other people: doin what i like. hobby.

i do admit i have a collecting thing.. like, ill get engines, and ill have a bunch at a time to work on.
and theyre antique kind.. not newer kind tho.
idk. i have like this thing with machinery, to make it nice again/restore things.
and what careers/jobs/occupations does this lead to? cuz the field is big kinda.

Your sweet, Just hope everything works when you get done especially if you mess with wiring or computer. Was it running when you got it.Nice hobby but if you want to get serious it can be a very rewarding career doing what you love and make good money too. Course you’d need to go to trade or tech col.to learn trade properly. When I retired I was earning $86,000.00 a year as Auto Tech. There are more women entering this trade than you may think. Maybe boyfriend doesn’t have the mechanical ability and makes him feel left out. Either get him involved or divide your two loves equally. I wish you luck, spunky lass. If you go pro you can laugh all the way to the bank.

cheers…nice to hear u do all that….i luv the idea u create….for many its a dying art….its one thing to fix, its another to craft…..im an old gearhead……and if u dont mind the advise i give……do what u do, but start to steer away from petro stuff……thats my generation…..do ur thing in the next…….sweetie, close ur eyes and see this…..hydrogen classics………electric rat rods…….bio pick ups…….imagine ur fav car and u pop the hood…..its some other motor……..i have an 1967 mercedes 250se coupe…..i look at her and she is already apart in my mind……..i just waiting to see what will drive her……..all sleeper, imagine all original inside but u push things and panels open to laptops and screens and hidden goodies…..all green…..all steel……..all leather……only plastic in there is the knobs for the windoes and heater control………close ur eyes and see………see it?……..if u worry about what everyone sez…….u never hear whats in u…….listen to u before u listen to anything else……..and if u do it right and do it that strikes a cord with people like u…..THEY WILL PAY…….so now where are u?…….doing ur thing and getting paid……first is to realize what it is…….and u already there………read what u wrote…….read it from where i stand…….go sweetie…….do ur thing

another thing….get a video cam and set up where u work…..video what u doing and talk to cam on how u are taking things apart….describe it as u do it…..”this little screw/bolt goes in the 3rd hole next to the right edge” blah blah blah…….now u got a record to put back…..and keep parts out of the room….oils and crap are not good for u…….do us all a favor and go on the next generation of power……leave the v8′s and gas burners for us old folks…..move foward but stay true

i am so stoked to hear u say that……i hope one day u say the same to some kid talking about hovercraft…..remember…….KISS

I think it’s cool but i’m a gearhead myself. My daughter (13) is getting into fab work and auto restoring. Over the summer as a father, son, daughter project we built two go karts from ground up. My daughter did most of the welding and really picked up fast on mig welding. Also she done most of the cutting with a sawzall and loved it lol.

I had a 1981 chevy monte carlo rolling body in the yard. She laid claim to it 2 years ago. So she’s going to restore it over the next 2-4 years for her 1st car. I’m going to help here and we are going to fund the build together. I told her I would match her 1 to 1 on work/time and money put into the car.

I see nothing wrong with a girl/woman working with metal, cars, ec

Just be strong minded because you will get called names by some people and no matter how good you become you will always seem as you have to ‘prove’ yourself to alot of closed minded men out there

You are doing a restoration on an 85 Buick, and you work on older engines. It sounds like you know what you are doing.
    I think he should go put on his work clothes and help you! {if he has work clothes}
When you finish the job, and it looks cool and runs good, then I think they will change their mind about you efforts.
I just hope your next project is an older muscle car, and I bet they support you on that one. If not, do it anyway!
